Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Jose has been involved in the sport as a player, coach, manager and league director since 1983. He played in middle and high school. While in college, Jose played for collegiate club teams and for A/AA level club teams in the former USVBA. In 1990, he played in the NIRSA Volleyball Championship Tournament, in Knoxville, TN and in 1991, while representing Drexel University, in Philadelphia, PA, was selected to the Big 5 All Tournament Team after leading the Dragons to the Championship Final. Also, while in college, Jose actively played beach and grass volleyball tournaments in the East Coast and Puerto Rico. Upon return to Puerto Rico, Jose continued his volleyball career as a player in the Puerto Rico Volleyball Federation First Division and participating in outdoor tournaments.
Over the years, Jose had the privilege of playing and training with several players and coaches with professional and international experience. He also actively played soccer in the Puerto Rico Soccer Federation reaching the Superior League at the age of 16.
Currently, he lives in Ashburn, VA and continues to play in adult men and co-ed teams. Since his arrival, Jose has coached middle and high school age teams for Loudoun Youth Volleyball and the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association (NVVA). While coaching for the NVVA, Jose, together with other staff coaches, initiated the Volley Juniors Program and served as instructor. Jose also served as Assistant Coach for the South Lakes HS Varsity Team, in the Fall 2010, and the following year as Head Coach for Briar Woods High School Girls Varsity Volleyball, where he coached for 2 years, finishing 3rd in the Dulles 4A District and reaching the Regional Tournament on his first year. During his second year coaching at Briar Woods, Jose formed a group of athletes that won the VHSL State Championship the following year. In 2013, Jose returned to South Lakes HS as Assistant Coach of the Varsity Team to support fellow Areyto Volley Coach Mike Ware. There, Mike and Jose, together with former Coach Angel Rivera, lead the South Lakes Seahawks to their first winning season in 3 years.
In 2016, Jose returned to Briar Woods as Freshmen Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach. That season, Jose was instrumental in the Falcons' run to the State Championship match for a second time in three years Currently, Jose is the Freshmen Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach at Independence High School.
He has also coached boys basketball and girls soccer.
Jose's biggest success is developing players.
He is married and has three girls with his wife, Yiyi.
