Ricardo is returning to AVA for the fourth year as a coach. In the 2016-17 season, Ricardo assisted the 15s, 16s and 17s coaches and our Director with the skill development program. His work was instrumental in the preparation of our teams for the regional and national competitions.

Ricky is a native of Toa Baja PR, where he participated and excelled in various sports (baseball, boxing and volleyball) landing opportunities to represent the Island in tournaments abroad. In 1992, he earned a full volleyball scholarship to La Salle High School in Bayamon PR, which is considered among the best volleyball programs in Puerto Rico. Besides becoming team captain after his sophomore year, he received multiple awards for his performance in the league, including Best Defensive Player three years in a row, as well as Best Setter in his junior and senior years. During his senior year he set a school record for assists, earning him the Most Valuable Player award. After graduating, Ricky attended Interamerican University on a second volleyball scholarship as a setter where he was named to the 2nd Team All Conference. It was at this moment that he was invited to play for the Llaneros de Toa Baja and later with the Caciques de San Sebastian in the Puerto Rico Superior League, one of the few professional leagues in the hemisphere. While playing at this level, he received the Coaches Leadership Award and All-Defensive Team Award. In 1995, Ricky moved to California to begin his graduate degree in Architecture, where he continued involved in  volleyball as a coach at camps and clinics. He now lives in Ashburn, VA with his wife and son.

Goals and Objectives:

I coach by looking at the big picture; at the team. Only then can I see what needs to be tweaked, added or lessened in the individual players’ mechanics and natural talents. My goal is to take the time to get to know my players- look for each player’s skill-set, personality/character and heighten it via drills, positive reinforcement and confidence building. I believe in cultivating “inner motivation”, which gets my players through mistakes, self-doubt and/or any impulse to give up, in and off the court. I take pride in being a good example for the girls, making sure that while the game has its ups and downs, they can always look at me and see an even-keel coach fully supporting them.
